Hair Extensions Aftercare

Hi beauty bestie!

Here are some of my aftercare tips for hair extensions I love sharing with my clients to help keep their extensions as long as possible.

Make your extensions smile with these helpful tips.

Brush Daily

The most important rule to hair extensions aftercare is to brush your extensions daily because it helps to prevent TANGLING and MATTING of the hair. Brushing also distributes the natural oils from your scalp throughout the extensions, keeping them moisturized and healthy. Regular brushing can also help to maintain the shape and style of your extensions, ensuring they look their best for longer. I like to brush my extensions every morning and evening in my self care routine. Brushing your extensions gently and with the right tools can also help to minimize shedding and breakage of the hair. It is important to start at the bottom of your hair and slowly start to move up. Overall, daily brushing is a simple but effective way to keep your extensions in top condition and looking great.

Detangling with Wide Tooth Comb

Detangling hair extensions with a wide tooth comb is beneficial for several reasons. Firstly, it helps to prevent damage to the extensions and your natural hair. A wide tooth comb is gentler on the hair than a brush or a fine-tooth comb, which can pull or break the hair. Whenever I have a shower and my hair is wet, I am extremely cautious and gentle with it, I only use a wide tooth comb and detangler to start separating my hair in sections. Secondly, it helps to maintain the integrity and shape of the extensions. Using a wide tooth comb ensures that the hair extensions are not pulled out of shape or tangled together, which can cause them to look unnatural or lose their volume. Finally, it can make the detangling process easier and quicker, saving you time and effort. A wide tooth comb is a simple yet effective way to keep your hair extensions looking and feeling their best for hair extensions aftercare.

Key Tip: Do not brush or comb at the base of your hair extensions, skip about an inch as to not loosen the bond

Boar Bristle Brush

I use a boar bristle brush only while my hair is detangled and dry. Using a mixed boar and bristle brush on hair extensions can help to distribute the natural oils from the scalp throughout the extensions, keeping them healthy and shiny. The bristles are gentle and won’t damage the extensions, while also helping to detangle and smooth the hair. It’s important to use a brush specifically designed for hair extensions to avoid any pulling or tugging that could cause damage. Regular brushing with a boar bristle brush can also help to prolong the life of the extensions by preventing tangling and matting.

Apply Oil

Adding oil to your hair extensions is essential because it helps to keep them moisturized, soft, and shiny. Hair extensions do not receive natural oils like our scalp produces, so they can become dry and brittle over time. Adding oil can also help to prevent tangling and breakage, which can prolong the life of your extensions. However, it’s important to use the right type of oil that won’t weigh down or damage the hair, such as argan oil. I use 100% pure argan oil on my hair and extensions and it makes it so shiny and healthy looking. Oiling is a hidden secret in hair extensions aftercare.

Let your hair do the talking.

Use Sulfate-free Shampoo

For hair extensions aftercare sulfate-free shampoo is recommended for hair extensions because it helps to preserve the integrity and longevity of the extensions. Sulfates are harsh detergents that STRIP the hair and scalp of natural oils, leading to dryness, breakage, and color fading. This is particularly detrimental to hair extensions, which are not attached to the scalp and therefore do not receive the same natural oils. Using a sulfate-free shampoo will help to keep your extensions looking healthy and feeling soft and manageable.

Moisturizing or Clarifying Shampoo

Using moisturizing shampoo on hair extensions can help keep them hydrated and prevent them from becoming dry and brittle. Clarifying shampoo, on the other hand, can help remove build-up from styling products and other residues that can weigh down the extensions and make them look dull. I recommend having both and alternating between them each wash day. It is important for hair extensions aftercare to use the appropriate shampoo for your specific type of extensions in order to keep them looking their best and extend their lifespan.

Avoid Products with Silicone

It is recommended to avoid hair extension products with silicone because silicone can coat and weigh down the hair, making it difficult to style and causing build-up over time. Furthermore, silicone can prevent moisture from penetrating the hair shaft, leading to dryness and brittleness. It is best to opt for hair extension products that are free of silicone or contain only a minimal amount. While shopping for hair products I always like to check the ingredient list so I am sure what I am applying to my hair. This is a great way to maintain your hair extensions aftercare.

Regular Maintenance

While at your current appointment I can book you in for your next appointment so we can ensure your hair extensions are well cared for. Booking regular maintenance appointments for your hair extensions is crucial in hair extensions aftercare, ensuring that they remain in TOP condition. Over time, extensions can become tangled, matted, and damaged, which can make them look unnatural and uncomfortable to wear. Regular maintenance appointments can help to prevent these issues by allowing a professional stylist to properly care for your extensions. In addition, these appointments give you the opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have with your stylist, who can offer advice on how to properly care for your extensions at home. By booking regular maintenance appointments, you can help to extend the life of your extensions and keep them looking beautiful and natural.

Silk Pillowcases and Scrunchies

I switched to using silk accessories with my hair exclusively many years ago. After years of styling my hair tight and bleaching, my hair was fragile and breaking. I researched and tested many products to find ones that work, when I came across silk. Silk pillowcases and silk scrunchies are great for hair extensions because they are smooth and don’t cause FRICTION like cotton or other materials. This means less tangling, breakage, and damage to your extensions. Silk also helps to retain moisture, which keeps your hair and extensions hydrated. Also, silk is hypoallergenic and gentle on the skin, reducing the risk of irritation or acne. Using silk pillowcases and scrunchies can help to extend the lifespan of your hair extensions and improve their overall appearance and health.

Leave-in Conditoner

One great tip in hair extensions aftercare is using leave-in conditioner on hair extensions, it’s beneficial because it helps to keep the hair hydrated and nourished. Hair extensions are often subjected to styling tools, harsh weather conditions, and other environmental factors that can cause damage and dryness. Leave-in conditioner helps to protect the hair from damage and keep it looking healthy and shiny. Also, it can help to detangle the hair and make it easier to manage, which can save time and effort in styling. In the end, using a leave-in conditioner on hair extensions can help to maintain their quality and prolong their lifespan.

Detangler

Using a detangler on your hair extensions can help prevent tangles and knots, making them easier to manage and prolonging their lifespan. When I was younger, my mom used to pour bottles of detangle onto my hair to untangle it and keep it healthy. I put a lot of stain on my hair during dance competitions and the integrity of the hair is so important. Detanglers provide added moisture to your extensions, preventing dryness and damage. In addition, using a DETANGLER can make brushing or combing your extensions a smoother and less painful experience, reducing the risk of premature breakage or shedding. To conclude, incorporating a detangler into your hair care routine can help keep your extensions looking and feeling their best. For good hair extensions aftercare, it’s best to detangle slowly.

Braid While Sleeping

Braiding your hair extensions while sleeping can help to prevent tangling and matting of the hair. This is particularly important for individuals with long or curly hair extensions, which are more prone to tangles. Braiding the hair also keeps it in place, reducing the likelihood of it getting caught or pulled while you sleep. Braids can help to maintain the style and shape of your hair extensions, allowing you to wake up with beautiful, well-defined curls or waves. I like to put my hair in a low loose braid with a silk scrunchies or in a silk no-heat curls band to keep it untangles and wake up with waves or curls. Braiding your hair extensions while sleeping is a simple and effective way to keep your hair looking great and feeling healthy.

Silk Hair Cap

Sleeping with a silk hair cap while wearing hair extensions can help to protect the extensions and prevent them from tangling or becoming damaged while you sleep. The hair cap is a great hair extensions aftercare tip, as it can also help to keep your natural hair moisturized and prevent it from drying out overnight. Finally, using a silk hair cap can help to PROLONG the life of your extensions and reduce the amount of maintenance required to keep them looking good.

“My hair is too big.” – said no woman, ever.

Avoid Swimming for Prolonged Periods

Swimming for prolong periods with hair extensions is not recommended as it can cause damage to both the extensions and your natural hair. Chlorine and saltwater can cause the extensions to become dry, brittle, tangled, and even discolored. To maintain your hair extensions aftercare try to keep your extensions dry. Also, the weight of the extensions can pull on your natural hair, leading to breakage and hair loss. It is best to avoid swimming with hair extensions, or if you must, wear a swim cap and rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water after swimming. When I’m on vacation I like to bring a swim cap with me and also throw my hair up in a high bun style as to not get the hair extensions wet as often.

Hair mask

For hair extensions aftercare, using a hydrating hair mask on your extensions is essential to maintain their health and longevity. Hair extensions, like your natural hair, need moisture to prevent tangling, breakage, and damage. Without proper HYDRATION, extensions can become dry and brittle, leading to shedding and a shorter lifespan. A hydrating hair mask can help to restore moisture to your extensions and leave them looking and feeling healthy and shiny. Using a hair mask regularly can help to prevent the buildup of oils and products that can weigh down your extensions and make them look dull. To conclude, incorporating a hydrating hair mask into your extension care routine is a simple yet effective way to keep your extensions looking their best. I like to try a few different professional grade hair masks to give my hair a reset biweekly or monthly.

Don’t Wet Fusions for 24 Hours

It is recommended for hair extensions aftercare to avoid getting your fusion hair extensions wet for at least 24 hours after installation. This is because the glue used to attach the extensions needs time to fully bond with your natural hair. Getting the extensions wet too soon can cause the glue to weaken and the extensions to slip out. Furthermore, wet hair is more prone to tangling and can cause damage to the bonds. It is best to follow the advice of your stylist and wait the recommended amount of time before washing or getting your hair wet. All other extension methods this does not apply to as they have no glue component.

Life is short, make each hair flip fabulous darling.

Section Hair

Properly sectioning hair extensions when cleaning and rinsing is important for several reasons. Firstly, it ensures that each section of hair is thoroughly cleaned and rinsed, preventing any buildup of product or dirt. Secondly, it helps to prevent tangling and matting of the extensions, which can be difficult to untangle and may cause damage. Lastly, sectioning the hair extensions allows for easier and more EFFICIENT cleaning, making the process quicker and more effective. I have a few alligator clips in my shower to help section my hair, I take each section separately to make sure I shampoo and rinse the base throughly with my fingers. You can do horizontal or quadrant sectioning, whichever is easier with your extension type. Remember conditioner is only applied to the end of the hair including hair extensions. Please let me know if I can help demonstrate good sectioning practices.

Blow Dry

In hair extensions aftercare, it is not recommended to let your hair extensions air dry as excess water can cause damage to the hair. This can lead to tangling, matting, and even mold growth. Using a microfiber towel to gently pat dry the hair extensions first is a safer option. Then blow drying with a low heat setting especially at the base of the hair is strongly advised. Using heat protectant products before blow drying can help protect the hair from heat damage. Keep in mind you are now blow drying more hair so the process may take longer to become completely dry, be patient.

Don’t Remove Yourself

Please don’t attempt to remove hair extensions yourself! It is not recommended in hair extensions aftercare to remove hair extensions on your own at home. This is because removing hair extensions incorrectly or without proper tools may cause damage to your natural hair. You should always have them installed and removed by a professional who is trained to do so. It would be devastating to you if you tried removing yourself incorrectly and the only way to fix it would be to cut and have bald patches in your hair. Let’s keep your natural hair healthy and seek professionals. It is best to seek the assistance of a professional stylist who can safely and effectively remove your extensions without causing harm to your hair.
