Hi beauty bestie!
Here are my tips for lash aftercare. These are the things I would do to help keep the best retention. Protect your investment by following these steps.
Don’t Get Wet for 24 Hours
The first step to lash aftercare is to keep your eyelashes dry at first. It is recommended to avoid getting your eyelash extensions wet for the first 24 hours after application. This is because the adhesive used to attach the extensions to your natural lashes needs time to fully bond and dry. Getting them wet too soon can weaken the bond and cause the extensions to fall out prematurely. It is important to follow this guideline to ensure the longevity and durability of your eyelash extensions. If you do accidentally get your lashes wet, dry and brush them immediately.
Brush Your Lashes Daily
Also, you should brush your lashes daily with a spoolie. It helps to keep your eyelashes looking neat and separated, prevents them from tangling or twisting together, and helps to distribute natural oils throughout the lashes. Additionally, brushing your lashes can also stimulate blood flow to the hair follicles, which can promote lash growth. It is important to use a clean spoolie brush and to be gentle when brushing to avoid damaging the extensions or pulling them out prematurely. Don’t forget to brush!
Shampoo Your Eyelashes
Washing your eyelash extensions with a certified lash shampoo is so important. First, using a regular face wash or soap can damage the extensions and cause them to fall out. Second, lash shampoos are specifically formulated to clean the extensions without compromising the glue bond. Third, using a certified lash shampoo can help prevent eye infections and keep the extensions looking fresh and clean. Overall, washing your eyelash extensions with a certified lash shampoo is an essential part of maintaining their quality and LONGEVITY.

Wash Regularly
Regularly washing your eyelash extensions maintains their cleanliness and hygiene. It helps remove any dirt, oil, or makeup residue that may accumulate on them over time, which can cause infections and irritation. Additionally, keeping your extensions clean can prolong their lifespan and prevent shedding early. Therefore, it is recommended to wash your eyelash extensions at least twice a day with a gentle, oil-free lash shampoo. I like to teach my clients to use a lash cleansing brush to gently wash in circular motions for 1-2 minutes.
The cleaner your lashes the healthier they will be.
Use Only Oil-free Products
In order to follow your lash aftercare, you should use only oil-free products on eyelash extensions and eye area because oil can break down the adhesive that holds the extensions in place. This can cause the extensions to fall out prematurely or become misshapen. Additionally, oil can build up on the extensions and attract dirt and debris, which can lead to eye infections. Using oil-free products can help to maintain the longevity and appearance of the extensions while also promoting EYE HEALTH. Remember to use oil-free products around the entire eye area such as your cleanser, toner, serums, moisturizer, makeup, makeup remover, etc.

Use Lint-free Accessories
If you use lint accessories it may cause uncomfortable pulling, your extensions will get caught in the fibres and premature shedding of your eyelashes may occur. Using lint-free accessories on eyelash extensions is important because lint or other fibers can easily stick to the adhesive used to attach the extensions, making them look messy and unnatural. Lint can also cause irritation or infection if it gets into the eyes. Using lint-free accessories such as brushes, cloths, wipes, and applicators ensures that the extensions are clean and free from any debris, allowing for a more natural and seamless look. Additionally, it helps to maintain the hygiene of the extensions and promotes their longevity.
Sleep on Your Back
Sleeping on your back with eyelash extensions is recommended to avoid any potential damage to the lashes. When sleeping on your side or stomach, your lashes can rub against the pillow or bedding, causing them to become twisted or even fall out. Additionally, sleeping on your back can also reduce the risk of developing wrinkles and acne, as your face is less likely to come into contact with the pillow. Overall, sleeping on your back is the best way to protect your eyelash extensions while also promoting healthy skin.
Make your lashes do the talking.
Don’t Pull or Rub your Lashes
In your lash aftercare instructions, it is not recommended to pull or rub your eyelash extensions. Firstly, pulling or rubbing can cause damage to both your natural lashes and the extensions, leading to breakage and premature shedding. If you pull your natural lashes out with your extensions you will have bald spots on your lash line. Additionally, rubbing can irritate your eyes and cause discomfort or even infection. Rubbing your eyelash extensions may twist and tangle them, they may begin to downturn and poke your eyeball or get caught on your lower lashes. To maintain the longevity and health of your lash extensions, it is best to follow the aftercare instructions provided by your lash technician and handle them gently.
Do Not Curl Your Extensions
Curling your eyelash extensions with a lash curler can cause damage to both the extensions and your natural lashes. The extensions are already designed to have a curl, so using a lash curler is unnecessary and can potentially break or pull out your natural lashes. You can ask your lash tech to customize your set to have very curly or less curly lashes. Additionally, if you use heat to curl your extensions the heat can melt the adhesive used to attach the extensions, causing them to detach prematurely. It is best to avoid curling your eyelash extensions and instead let them naturally enhance your eyes. Stay away from the curler.
Book a Fill Appointment Every 2-4 Weeks
One of the most important lash aftercare instructions is booking your fill. Booking your eyelash extension fill appointments regularly is important for several reasons. First, it helps maintain the fullness and shape of your eyelash extensions, ensuring they look their BEST. Second, regular fills can prevent damage to your natural lashes by removing any grown-out or twisted extensions that can cause strain. Finally, consistent fills can save time and money in the long run by reducing the need for full removal and replacement of your eyelash extensions. Many factors contribute to your retention including your lash shedding cycle and following aftercare instructions. On average it is best to book in every 2-4 weeks. I prefer to fill at 50% of your lashes remaining.
Avoid Mascara
It’s not recommended to apply mascara with eyelash extensions because it can cause damage to the extensions and may require them to be replaced more frequently. The mascara can also clump and make the extensions appear less natural. Additionally, many mascaras contain oils and other ingredients that can weaken the bond between the extensions and natural lashes, leading to premature shedding. It’s best to use a lash extension-safe mascara or avoid mascara altogether and rely on the extensions for added volume and length. It is especially disastrous to wear waterproof mascara, as it will stick to the extensions and it will be extremely difficult to remove. When you feel the urge to apply mascara that is usually a SIGN you need to book a fill.
That’s the beauty of having eyelash extensions, just say no to mascara.
Be Careful Under Heavy Showers
Heavy showers are not recommended with eyelash extensions because the strong water pressure and prolonged exposure to warm water can cause the lashes to loosen and fall out prematurely. Additionally, the force of the water can cause the lashes to tangle or become misshapen, compromising the overall look of the extensions. It is best to use a gentle, downward-facing spray when showering to minimize the amount of water that comes into contact with the lashes. I also like to recommend to cup their hands to scoop water upwards while washing their eyelash extensions to my clients.
Never Try to Remove Yourself
It is not recommended to remove lash extensions yourself as it can cause damage to your natural lashes. Lash extensions are attached to your natural lashes using a strong adhesive, and pulling them off can lead to breakage and loss of your own lashes. You will develop small bare spaces on your lash line which will take weeks to regrow your lashes. Furthermore, removing lash extensions requires special tools and techniques that are best left to trained professionals. Attempting to remove them yourself can also result in irritation or infection of the eye area. Therefore, it is always best to visit a licensed lash technician for safe and proper removal of your lash extensions. For safety reasons, this rule is part of your lash aftercare instructions.
Lash Tip: Cleanse your lashes before your lash appointment, clean lashes = more lash time
Silk Pillowcase
Using a silk pillowcase is good for your eyelash extensions because it is a soft and smooth material that reduces friction between your lashes and the pillowcase. This helps to prevent your lash extensions from getting caught, tangled, or pulled out while you sleep, which can damage or shorten their lifespan. Also, silk is hypoallergenic and gentle on your skin, reducing the risk of irritation or inflammation around your eyes. Overall, using a silk pillowcase can help to protect and prolong the life of your eyelash extensions. I’ve been using exclusively silk pillowcases for years now and I have really saw an improvement.

Protect from Heat
It is important to protect eyelash extensions from the sun to prevent them from becoming damaged or DISCOLOURED. Excess sunlight exposure can dry your lashes and break them or cause them to fall out. The sun’s UV rays can break down the adhesive used to attach the extensions, causing them to fall off prematurely. Additionally, direct sun exposure can cause the extensions to fade or change color, making them appear unnatural. You should avoid going out in extreme heat , wearing sunglasses or a hat can help protect your eyelash extensions from heating up when you are outdoors.
One thing popular with most of my clients is polarized glasses and I agree they are good at keeping your lashes cool on a scorching day.
Avoid Hot Treatments
It is important to protect eyelash extensions from heat because high temperatures can cause the adhesive to weaken or melt, leading to the extensions falling off prematurely. It’s good to avoid hot treatments like steam baths, hot tubs, and saunas. Heat can also cause the lashes to lose their shape and curl, resulting in an unnatural appearance. Additionally, exposure to heat can damage both natural lashes and extensions, leading to breakage. To ensure the longevity and health of your eyelash extensions, it is crucial to avoid excessive heat from sources such as hair dryers, ovens, and saunas. That being said, short intervals of steam and sauna aren’t a threat but prolonged exposure is.
Here are five quick tips to take care of your eyelash extensions:
- Avoid getting them wet for the first 24-48 hours after application.
- Use a gentle, oil-free lash shampoo to clean your lashes daily.
- Brush your lashes with a clean, spoolie brush to keep them looking neat.
- Avoid rubbing your eyes or sleeping face-down to prevent damage to your extensions.
- Schedule touch-up appointments every 2-4 weeks to maintain your desired look.
Don’t Swim in Saltwater
Saltwater can break down the bond between the adhesive used to attach eyelash extensions and natural lashes. This can cause the extensions to loosen and fall off early. In addition, saltwater can cause dryness and brittleness in the extensions, leading to breakage and a shorter lifespan. It is recommended to avoid exposing eyelash extensions to saltwater, or to wash them thoroughly with fresh water after swimming in the ocean or a pool.
So many love to get their lashes done for their vacation, just remember your lash aftercare.
No Eye Treatments
It is generally recommended to avoid getting a lift and tint or other treatments in the eye area with eyelash extensions. This is because the chemicals used in these procedures can potentially damage the extensions and even cause them to fall out. Furthermore, the lift and tint can alter the appearance of the extensions and make them look less natural. If you are interested in enhancing your lash look, it is best to stick with just the extensions or explore other options that are safe for use with them. Because I have blonde natural eyelashes I like to get a lift & tint before getting my extensions on as it enhances the dark lash line. BEFORE never after.
Don’t Cut Your Extensions
A safe tip for your lash aftercare is to avoid cutting your lashes. Cutting your eyelash extensions is not recommended as it can damage both your natural lashes and the extensions. Eyelash extensions are designed to fall out naturally with your own lashes, and cutting them can cause unevenness and shorten their lifespan. Additionally, cutting the extensions can result in a blunt tip, which can irritate your eyes or cause discomfort. I have seen a few cases of cut extensions and they never look natural and the client became uncomfortable. It is best to let them fall out on their own or have a professional remove them to ensure the health and safety of your natural lashes.
Don’t Let Hair Products Seep Onto Lashes
It is not recommended to let hair products come into contact with your eyelash extensions. Hair products contain ingredients that are not suitable for use around the eye area and may cause irritation or damage to the extensions. It is best to use only products specifically designed for eyelash extensions, such as a lash shampoo or lash-safe eyeliner. As well as, be cautious when washing your hair to avoid getting hair shampoo or conditioner on your eyelash extensions, as this can also cause damage.
Do Ask Questions to Your Lash Tech
Asking your lash technician questions is important for several reasons. Firstly, it allows you to better understand the process and products being used, which can help you make informed decisions about your lash extensions. As well as, it can help ensure that you are receiving safe and high-quality services. By asking about their training, certifications, and experience, you can feel more confident in their abilities. I give each of my clients a lash aftercare card which includes the best tips to maintain their eyelashes. I naturally discuss all types of lash topics including aftercare throughout the service. If you are new to lashes, it is good to get answers to all the questions you may have. I also have a FAQ section on the bottom of my lash page on my website. Lastly, asking questions can help you communicate your preferences and concerns, leading to a more personalized and satisfying experience. I love questions.
